What Is Reiki?
Reiki is a beautiful, non-invasive energy healing technique that originated in Japan. The word "Reiki" combines "rei" (universal or spiritual) and "ki" (life force energy)—the vital energy that flows through all living things. Developed as a path to holistic well-being, Reiki helps restore balance to the body's energy system, promoting deep relaxation, stress reduction, and the body's natural ability to heal itself on physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual levels.
During a session, the practitioner gently places their hands on or just above the body, acting as a channel for this intelligent, loving energy. Reiki is always safe, gentle, and works for the recipient's highest good—no manipulation or force is involved.
The History of Reiki
Reiki was rediscovered in the early 1920s by Mikao Usui, a Japanese scholar, Tendai Buddhist, and spiritual seeker born in 1865. After years of studying ancient texts, meditation, and a profound 21-day fasting retreat on Mount Kurama, Usui experienced a spiritual awakening that granted him the ability to access and transmit this universal healing energy.
He taught the system to thousands, training around 20 masters before his death in 1926. One of his successors, Dr. Chujiro Hayashi, formalized clinics, and Hawayo Takata brought Reiki to the West in the 1930s–1940s. Today, it's practiced worldwide as a complementary therapy.
Usui emphasized that Reiki is a spiritual path as much as a healing one, guided by five simple principles (often recited daily):
Just for today, I will not be angry.
Just for today, I will not worry.
Just for today, I will be grateful.
Just for today, I will do my work honestly.
Just for today, I will be kind to every living thing.
How Reiki Works: Attunement, Symbols, and Energy Flow
Reiki isn't something the practitioner "does"—they simply facilitate the flow of universal energy. The ability to channel Reiki is activated through a sacred process called attunement (or Reiju), performed by a Reiki Master. This opens and aligns your energy channels permanently, allowing Reiki to flow strongly whenever you intend it.
Traditional Usui Reiki includes sacred symbols introduced at higher levels to focus the energy:
Cho Ku Rei (Power symbol) – Amplifies energy.
Sei He Ki (Emotional/mental symbol) – Balances emotions and protects.
Hon Sha Ze Sho Nen (Distance symbol) – Sends Reiki across time and space.
Dai Ko Myo (Master symbol) – Connects to the highest spiritual level.
Reiki can be practiced in person, at a distance, or on yourself (self-Reiki)—making it incredibly versatile.
